How The Penis Gets Hard

Many of us take for granted the fact that when we are sexually stimulated or aroused, our penis will grow larger. However, many of us have not the slightest idea how this happens, and the mechanism which is actually causing this bodily effect.

In this article, we will take a look at this phenomenon - by examining the processes behind an erection, so that you will come out having a better idea of how the penis actually works.

Why The Penis Becomes Erect

There are many reasons why the penis might become erect at any particular time. Here is a list of the most common reasons:

  • Sexual stimulation causes the erection.
  • Random erotic thoughts or psychological factors.
  • Chemical changes within the body.

Of course, the main one of these (and the most obvious) is when you are sexually stimulated. This is all very well, but it still doesn't explain exactly how the brain instructs the body to "get an erection".

The Physical Processes Involved

On a fundamental level, the penis is an organ which is controlled by the brain. When the brain is sexually excited, a number of chemical and electrical changes occur, which ultimately results in the erection. So - what are these changes? Well - here is a list:

  • Chemical changes - i.e. an increase in the production of testosterone.
  • Increase in the flow of blood to the genitalia region.
  • Relaxing of the muscles around the penis area.

All of these things - combined - lead to an erection as felt by you. But this still leaves us with one question which is unanswered. What is the reason for an erection, and why are we not always erect?

The Evolutionary Reasoning Behind Erections

An erection is the result of an evolutionary process which has seen many changes take place in the human body. Ultimately, the reason why the body generates an erection when we are sexually stimulated is so that the action of sex is made easier.

There is no other reason than this - and this often surprises people. However, when you think about it, the functioning of the penis is really quite a simple thing. It becomes erect when necessary to provide support during sex, and it then becomes soft when not participating in sexual activity - which allows us to continue with everyday life.
